Hermann Zapf changed font design in many ways. Firstly, he created the popular Zapf Dingbats, Palatino and Optima fonts. Secondly, he pioneered computer typography, vigorously promoting design from typography to computer typography. Thirdly, he invented the typesetting program that led to much of modern software development.

RESEARCH

Paul Rand was a well-known figure in the design world who transformed post-World War II America through new ways of designing advertising, brand ideas and designs.  His designs moved copy from the primary position of design to a parallel position, allowing more interaction between form and function by simplifying the weight of text. Paul Rand has long been known for his minimalist modernism, but he has always seen simplicity as not the end purpose of design, but the by-product of a good idea.

Alan Fletcher is regarded as the “father” of British graphic design. In addition to his inspirational design works, Alan Fletcher has changed the way people think about design. Based on his design works, his expressive writing, bold colors and strong visual language transform people’s perception on graphic design from a traditional dispensable and decorative role into a key element of commerce.

UNIT 5, WEEK 3

WORKSHOP

For the workshop today. I dicided to use this three drawing to reflect my tone and mood of my practice and used the indesign to do this workshop.

I’m a fan of Japanese manga since very young age. This is my drawing 3 years ago which shows my selfprotrait with my favorit character Shalnark in the manga Hunter x Hunter and 2 drawings about the characters in this manga. I used Indesign to make these designs and plan to use it in my book.

PROJECT IN MY PDF DECK WORK

I decided my 4 projects in the PDF. They are: my fanart drawings of the manga Golden Kamuy in 2021; my fanart drawing before 2020 about the manga Hunter x Hunter; my 3D modle exercise about metamorphosis, and my illustrations about a snuffbox in V&A museum.

After that I arranged all my pictures in order in indesign and use it to do typesetting

FIGMA LEARNING + POSTER

Massimo Vignelli is considered by many people as one of the most influential designers of the last century. His design works include packaging design, architectural design, interior design, public sign system, and display space design. He calls himself as an “information architect”, dedicates to condensing large and complex ideas into a form that is easier to understand and explore.

Milton Glaser is known as the father of world design. His more than 300 posters and illustrations, covering environmental design, interior design, interior and outdoor design of exhibition halls, restaurants, illustrate the ethical practice of design in clear language. In his view, designers need to make sure the audience understands their works at first sight.

Stefan Sagmeister is a skilled contemporary designer whose clients include the Rolling Stones, HBO, Guggenheim etc. Sagmeister’s works often combines humor, sex, unorthodoxy and painstaking detail to create jarringly modern designs. When he talked about the difference between design and art, he pointed out that how a designer have to distinguish between art and design, how designers see a design and how our creative products interact with the people who use it. Good design can help everyone, make everyone like it, even make everyone excited.

Her amazing designs have shaped people’s perception of graphic design and its application in many ways. She is good at using fonts as visual images, and the technique of using words as visual images has also had a profound impact on modern design.

RESEARCH IN WEEK 1

David Carson is known as the godfather of trash. Since his unique, unconventional attitude revolutionized the design industry, he is considered as a pioneer in American graphic design.

(Picture 1: David Carson’s work)

(Picture 2: David Carson’s work)

In David Carson’s design, there is no design philosophy for permutations and combinations. All words and pictures are deconstructed, truncated, paragraphs collide, they can be fragmentary, and reversed. All design elements reappear in an irregular but dynamic and imaginative way, even the ink stains of the printing become a part of the design.

(Picture 3: David’s cover + december page design for surf photographer extrodinare #Ted Grambeua 2014 calendar)

Saul Bass is good at using simple fonts and geometric fusion, which makes his works have distinct personal characteristics. He added the concept of motion on the basis of graphic design and started the upsurge of motion image design. In the poster design for The Man with the Golden Arm, he used concise and abstract graphic design method, which changed the design style of movie posters centered on the portraits of actors.

Differences between Chinese and Western Thinking

After I left China, I deeply felt the difference between myself and foreigners in various aspects. I grew up in traditional Chinese culture since I was a child, and the elderly in my family are also very traditional people. In such an environment, I have a deep feeling for traditional Chinese culture. When I come to London, I often recall my life in China.

Luckily, during the communication with Trudi, Dominic, Gemma, and many others in UAL, I started to take all the differences as usual.

The first is the interpersonal relationship. I have to choose to get together or keep independence. Chinese like to sit together, chat, play, and do any other things. There is a feeling of warmth and prosperity. However, in Britain, we emphasize individual independence. Everyone is an independent individual and does not like to have too many relationships with others. There will not be too many intersections in the neighborhood. People seem not as enthusiastic as the Chinese. Thus, in the beginning, without the everyday greetings and laughter of neighbors, I was not very comfortable with life here.

Second, whether criticism or retention. Chinese is subject to criticism and evaluation, and many like to evaluate and criticize others, maybe not in front of the talked one. Whether it is good or bad, we will inevitably receive some evaluation. Everything that happens will be moralized, and there will be a lot of moral kidnappings, which I do not like. But here in London, we have an attitude of “not easy to judge.” We do not complain and trouble others and do not force others to agree with our views.

The last is about rules. In China, people often break the rules. I am helpless and choose to accept even it is a fault. But in London, it will not work, and it will be greatly condemned.

In all, Chinese traditional culture has a greater impact on me, while new western thinking is also attractive. When taking the effects of thinking into the design, the works would be different, more or less.

PERSONAL PROJECT PROPOSAL

Section 1

The focus of the study is to explore the theme of transferring from human beings to metamorphosis. The idea is gained from the book The Metamorphosis about a transfer of a human being to bugs. The skills of drawing different styles of metamorphosis, and the meaning behind each metamorphosis will be explored. It also intends to find out how slight changes and postures of images reflect the inner feelings of those images created by me. The intended audience is all the people, especially those who are interested in arts and literature.

In order to explore the topic, I have created some images and read the books The Metamorphosis and Medieval Fantasy Art Bible: Transformation and Carnival. I am also working on seeking the skills behind the arts “The Garden of Earthly Delights.” Those books and arts will prepare me for the full discovery of the topic.

The ideas of the project will demonstrate the skills of creativity and how to instill the idea of creativity in works, which are taught in this semester. I have realized that it is crucial for me to create my own styles of images to attract the audience.

Section 2

The contextual references that will be used in my works include the books The Metamorphosis, Medieval Fantasy Art Bible: Transformation and CarnivalThe Garden of Earthly Delights, as well as the works of the artists including Christian Zucconi and Emil Melmoth. The book The Metamorphosis offers the main idea for my creation of works, and I will create the images based on the book, which talks about a story of a man who woke up and found him became a bug. As I talked about the theme of transferring, the book would be a great source for me to understand the idea of transferring The author created a bug and told his struggles. In my creation, I will also use images to show the inner struggles of modern people and how those people would transfer from human beings to bugs. The books Medieval Fantasy Art Bible: Transformation and Carnival, The Garden of Earthly Delights will provide some inspiration for me to have a look at how people were depicted in the Middle Ages, for I wanted to increase the mystery of religions in my creation. In addition, I also would like to use the drawing skills of Christian Zucconi and Emil Melmoth in my work. Christian Zucconi is good at doing sculpture, and he also instilled the sense of melancholic rapture that would be used in my arts. I want to use different images of metamorphosis to show the emotions of modern people. Furthermore, the works of Emil Melmoth also offer a sense of inspiration for me, and his works deliver a gruesome impression for viewers.

Section 3

The process for me to create a piece of art includes as follows. To begin with, I will ensure the topic of my works. In the next step, I will read some books such as The Metamorphosis related to my works and some pieces of art that would give me some inspiration. Then I will create the works and modeled the works. The tools for me to create the works are Maya, with which I will conduct 3D modeling. After that, I will print out the piece of works from the 3Dwork shop in the school.

Section 4

There are some steps that I need to analyze the piece of art critically. The first step is to read various materials and analyze the visual elements in my works, including the composition, sketches, and diagrams of my piece of work and the meaning behind the images. The responses from my teachers and other viewers will be the ones that determine if the work is successful or not. If all of the viewers think that my work should have much more improvement, then it might be concluded that the work could not strike people. I hope that through the works, I will practice the sense of aesthetics and work in the gallery in the future.

Views on the Exhibition of Luca Giordano’ Paintings

Luca Giordano was a famous Italian painter in the 17th century. His paintings have a healthy personal style. The Venetian and Barlow styles are part of his paintings. He produced nearly a thousand works in his lifetime. Most of his works embody the Neapolitan style. Besides, in the process of combining other painting styles, his paintings laid the foundation for the emergence of the Rococo style.

In the exhibition of Luca Giordano’s paintings, there is one striking feature. Most of his paintings do not use bright colors, so the whole picture does not look so bright. But in the works on display, some of the characters are often dressed in bright blue or red. Figures dressed in bright blue or red are usually in the middle of the painting. Therefore, the audience’s eyes are always attracted to these characters. And the figure in the bright clothes is the figure of justice. For example, in the painting work, Le Mariage de la Vierge, in the middle of the painting, sits the virgin, dressed in blue, looking quietly at the carpenter who kneels to propose to her.

Some Baroque paintings are also on display. For instance, in the painting work Il Ratto delleSabine, Some tough soldiers are looting the Sabin women (Bourgeois 623). All the guests were taken aback by the terrible sight before them. In this painting, there are many characters. All the characters come together. The action of them is also exaggerated. The use of light is also very reasonable. A bright sun shone on the naked chest of the captured woman, a vivid reflection of the brutality of the soldiers and the misery of Sabine women. The above oil painting is typical baroque works.

Views on the Exhibition of Italian Works

The Renaissance is an essential revolution in human history. It ended the dark ages of the middle ages in Europe. Religious thought is no longer the dominant ideology in society. The church’s grip on society has been severely shaken. With the awakening of people’s thinking, humanism has become the mainstream of social development. The Renaissance not only promoted social progress and the change in people’s ideas but also improved the rapid growth of human art and culture. In Italy, a significant number of great artists were born.

Many paintings by Italian artists are on display. Although many pictures still feature religious figures, the way they are presented has changed dramatically. The characters are no longer single board, but very vivid. The image of the Madonna is no longer cold and has always maintained a sense of alienation. Instead, the image of the Madonna began to resemble that of a human mother. In the eyes of the Madonna, who holds the son, there is love for the child. The audience can see a secular feeling in the works of Italian Renaissance artists.

Also, perspective was widely used in the works of Italian painters (Morelli 1). No matter what angle people look at the painting, the eyes of the character are always looking at the viewer. The combination of art and science is an essential feature of the pictures on display. The alternations of light and shade create a sense of space that belongs to the work itself. Therefore, figure painting has become closer to reality, and it is easier for the audience to get a sense of truth from the arts. In oil paintings, the painter pays excellent attention to the expression of the texture of the figures. Using different colors, the painter entirely shapes the image of different characters. The independent and different styles express the artistic and spiritual pursuit of Italian Renaissance painters.

Views on the Exhibition of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’ Painting

As an outstanding representative of impressionist painters, Rotrecht created a large number of excellent paintings in his life. He came from an aristocratic family but was not bound by the rules and habits of noble life. Unable to play outdoor sports due to his physical disability, he began to try painting in middle school, which laid a solid foundation for his future artistic creation. Besides, her mother’s support has helped her improve her painting skills. After moving to Montmartre, his work was deeply influenced by the region.

The exhibition showcases a large number of works created by Rotrecht in Montmartre. Montmartre was a place where people could indulge themselves. There were a lot of dance halls and brothels. His paintings vividly depict female dancers and prostitutes (Maroteaux 715). From the works on display, the audience can see that Rotrecht is very good at drawing figures. His characters are vivid. Viewers can even infer the nature from his paintings. Bold colors and simple brushwork constitute a significant feature of his paintings. In his paintings, the expressions or appearances of the characters are often exaggerated. Some of the characters even have severely distorted expressions. However, these exaggerated expression techniques give the characters strong vitality and feelings. When viewing a painting, the audience is often able to experience and even empathize with it. In pictures, figures are always placed in the most prominent positions.

As a person at the bottom of society, prostitutes often appear in Rotrecht’s paintings. Born into the aristocracy, Rotrecht did not hate to contact with the people who live in poor, and even willing to paint for them. His behavior partly reflects his criticism of social hierarchy and his disdain for aristocratic status.
